NCRC partners with multiple University IT units to provide IT infrastructure and services, including network and phone services, high-performance computing and other specialized research infrastructure, collaboration/communications services and end-user support.   • Planning a videoconference for your team? Several choices for both clinical and non-clinical videoconferencing are available.   • What makes a password strong? Adding non-alphanumeric characters, numbers, and mixing case helps, but according to a recent Carnegie-Mellon study, the length of your password is the most important factor. Aim for a password length greater than 15 characters. Want to change your password today to something more secure? Contact MSIS at 763-7770 or email msishelp@umich.edu.

  • Mac users: want to view the contents of a file without opening it? Highlight the file and hit the spacebar to get a preview of the file! Want to know more? Contact MSIS at 763-7770 or email msishelp@umich.edu.

  • Looking for an Email address?  In Outlook 2010, hit Ctrl+k (CMD+0 on Macintosh) to pull email addresses directly from the Global Address List, no more guessing!  Got questions?  Contact MSIS at 763-7770 or email msishelp@umich.edu.

  • Which login is it?  If you see med.umich.edu, it is usually your Level-2 password, if you see UMROOT, you know it is your Level-1 (Kerberos) password.  Still can’t find it?  Call MSIS at 734-763-7770 to get you on the right path!

  • Buying new server hardware?  Consider a virtual server.  These “computers within a computer” allow you to reduce the risk of buying, installing, and maintaining your own hardware. A virtual server runs entirely as a software program, which means it can be more flexible and easier to manage than physical hardware.   • Before you reserve a conference room, be sure to check if there is construction in the area at NCRC or on the Medical Campus.   • virtual machine, or VM, is a “computer within a computer” that allows you to run a different operating system. A VM runs entirely as a software program, which means it can be more flexible and easier to manage than physical hardware. Researchers use VMs to access and develop their web sites, applications, and databases.   • Find information on the web faster using the Find keyboard shortcut. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+f (Cmd+f on the Mac) to search for a word or words on a webpage. Want to really turbocharge your productivity? Check out this list of common keyboard shortcuts!

  • Getting too much email? If you want to leave a group, log into MCommunity and select the “My Groups” link at the top of your profile. Then, click on the group you'd like to leave. If this is a “joinable group” you will see a “Resign” button in the top left corner. If you do not see a “Resign” button, you'll need to contact a group owner to remove you.   • Did you know you can create a shared resource calendar in Outlook? Resource accounts are great for keeping track of shared equipment, departmental sick and vacation leave, special events, and more.   • Laptops, smartphones, and tablets are often targets for theft.  Did you know you can register your equipment to help recover it in case it’s stolen? The University of Michigan Police Department is offering a free registration program to help deter theft.   • An encryption bug known as “Heartbleed” was recently discovered in many of underlying technologies of the web. IT units across the University have already taken action to patch their systems, but many external services like Facebook and Dropbox are encouraging their users to change their passwords.   • MSIS has Service Desk agents available from 7am to 7pm every weekday (call 763-7770 or email msishelp@umich.edu). Need computer help after hours or on a weekend?  The UMHS Knowledgebase contains how-to, frequently asked questions, and other self help materials.

  • Prevent malware from slowing down your computer!  Malware often comes bundled with the installer of a piece of legitimate software, such as Java or Adobe Flash Player.  Keep this in mind when installing any software downloaded from the internet:

    • Download it from a trusted source - preferably the vendor’s own website.
    • When installing the software, pay attention to the message boxes before clicking Next or OK.  You may be able to opt out of extra software being installed.
    • If you ever feel unsure or suspicious, back out of the installation.

  • How to reset a Level-2 password.  Navigate to https://lvl2.med.umich.edu/ and click on the middle link, which says “Click here if your account is locked or if you've forgotten your Level-2 password.” You will be prompted to enter your uniqname.  You’ll also need to enter your Date of Birth and UMID number.  Once you’ve completed these responses click “next” and the process will begin.  The process can take anywhere from one to fifteen minutes, so please refrain from attempting to use your Level-2 login during this time period.  If you’re still having issues please call the MSIS Service Desk at 734-763-7770.

  • Where can I store sensitive data? Hint: Not Google! If you have questions call 763-7770 or email msishelp@umich.edu.

  • You can now reserve the Towsley Center (including Dow Auditorium, Sheldon Auditorium, the Towsley Lobby, and the Towsley Dining Room) using Schedulon. MSIS provides projection and other audiovisual services at Towsley, which you can also request using Schedulon. (These A/V services are fee based, and requests should be made two weeks in advance.)   • Protect your Data! Remember the "Rule of Three" for backups. Keep three copies of anything you care about and use two different formats (for example, Dropbox+DVDs or Hard Drive+Memory Stick or CD+Crash Plan) plus one off-site backup.   • Have a CoreImage laptop or tablet?  Moving to Windows 7 (links require Level-2 password) is a great opportunity for “data hygiene.” Clean up your unused folders and delete old or unnecessary files today! If you have questions call 763-7770 or email msishelp@umich.edu.

  • Bring in your CoreImage laptops or tablets before you migrate to Windows 7 (link requires Level-2 password). Use a wired UMHS network connection to ensure that your devices get the maintenance and security updates they need prior to the migration.   • Back up your data before you migrate to Windows 7. Your files will be transferred as part of the migration, but having a back up is always a good precaution. If you have questions call 763-7770 or email msishelp@umich.edu.
